DEERFIELD - Police are warning residents to be cautious of a phone scam in which a caller appears to be using the police department's business phone line.
Police said a resident reported the scam last week. She said someone had called her from what appeared to be the police department's business line and claimed to be from the U.S. Legal Department.
Police said the woman was given a reference number and told to call Jeff Atkins at a return number. The caller demanded money from the woman and threats of arrests were made, police said.
When police called the number the woman provided, a man who hung up and refused to answer the phone in subsequent calls, police said.
