Pastrnak trade rumors shot down by Sweeney

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney reportedly isn’t entertaining a potential trade for star winger David Pastrnak.

While the 21-year-old Pastrnak, a restricted free agent, has yet to sign a new contract with the Boston Bruins, Sweeney told the Boston Globe Tuesday that recent rumors of a potential trade involving Pastrnak are without merit.

“Not trading Pastrnak, “Sweeney bluntly stated in an email to the Globe.

Even though Sweeney said in June that the Bruins and Pastrnak were “moving in the right direction” towards a new contract, talks might have gone south over the last few weeks.

Pastrnak, who set career highs last season with 34 goals and 70 points over 75 games, is due for a big pay raise after making $925,000 during the 2016-17 season.

A new deal for Pastrnak will likely hover around $6 million in annual pay — within the same pay range given to other young stars like Filip Forsberg (six years, $36 million) and Johnny Gaudreau (six years, $40.5 million).

“We will continue to negotiate. We still have lots of time,” J.P. Barry, Pastrnak’s agent, told the Boston Globe in an email Tuesday. “David prefers to sign a longer term deal with the Bruins.

“The negotiations between myself and Don have been very open and both sides understand each other’s positions. Hopefully we can agree on an overall structure that is amenable to both sides in the next month.”

The new NHL season is rapidly approaching. Training camp is set to start in Boston on Sept. 14. According to the current CBA, Group 2 restricted free agents such as Pastrnak must come to terms on a new contract by Dec. 1. If they are unsigned beyond that point, they will be shut down for the remainder of the NHL season.
