DERRY — Brenda Guggisberg, executive director of The Upper Room, enjoys watching the children who come to the agency’s annual Ice Cream Social and Summerfest.

While the sweet stuff is pre-scooped for them, the kids can “go nuts” with a tableful of sprinkles, candy bits, syrups, whipped cream and, yes, nuts.

“The kids think they’ve died and gone to heaven,” Guggisberg said. “I love looking at their little faces.’”

The agency will celebrate summer, families and the season’s favorite treat on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. in its facility at 36 Tsienneto Road.

Guggisberg said the social began about 14 years ago, initially planned as a fun event for families in the agency’s teen parenting support group. It soon expanded to the agency’s other families, volunteers and the community.

“It’s a great way to pull people together,” Guggisberg said.

For the past several years, the ice cream has been donated by Moo’s, the popular stand on Crystal Avenue.

There will be a bounce house provided by Funsense, a popcorn stand by Life is Good and donated DJ services from Simply The Best. Wellsense will provide free face-painting.

The event will be held rain or shine, according to Guggisberg. “If it rains, we’ll just move inside,” she said.

And this year, as always, she’ll enjoy seeing children enjoy themselves. “They think this is our ‘home,’” she said of the kids’ perspective on the staff members. “They call it ‘Miss Janice’s house,’ ‘Miss Brenda’s house.’ We want it to feel like home to them.”

Reservations are not required to attend the ice cream social. For more information, call The Upper Room at 437-8477.
