BELMONT - The 74th annual Belknap County 4-H Fair offers a variety of agricultural-related activities for people of all ages Saturday and Sunday.

The event is the only nonprofit 4-H fair in New Hampshire. It started as a field day in the early years, organized to help Belknap County 4-H club members sharpen their animal handling skills in preparation for competition at the state fair, where they had a chance to win a berth to compete at the Eastern States Exposition at Springfield, Mass.

Over the years, it has developed a reputation as a family-friendly event, providing the chance for young and old to show animals, showcase their home-improvement or natural-resource skills. Steeped in tradition, it remains the smallest of the recognized agricultural fairs in the state.

Since 1977, the fair has been held at the former Royal Smith Farm on Mile Hill Road in Belmont, which offers spacious grassy fields and plenty of parking.

Admission is $7 with kids under age 10 free. The fair runs 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For information, visit
