Allenstown students celebrate Earth Day with fashion show
ALLENSTOWN — Students at the town’s elementary school celebrated Earth Day this year with style.
The more than 200 kids participated in various activities on campus Thursday, including a scavenger hunt, jewelry making, sunflower planting, landscaping work, a dance party and a presentation by Kelly Dwyer from the New Hampshire Audubon Society.
The day ended with a fashion show, where teachers strutted their stuff in outfits designed by their students: pants made out of straws, newspaper capes, plastic bag ball gowns and bubble wrap bows.
“You look like Cinderella,” one student called out to her teacher.
The day is meant to serve as an educational and fun celebration for Earth Day, which is Saturday. Each year the school has a theme for its celebration, as well. This year’s was a rock star theme, while last year’s was pollution.
“We try to come up with something new every year,” said Kimberlie Berrigan, a kindergarten teacher at the school and one of the organizers of the event.
