Sam Carey classic slated for tonight
The Manchester basketball community is set to once again pay tribute to one of its most beloved members with tonight’s fifth annual Sam Carey Basketball Classic at Southern New Hampshire University.
Carey, a former Southern New Hampshire University basketball standout, lost his life at the age of 26 in a fatal single-car accident in Campton in November 2011.
The event was started in Carey’s namesake by former SNHU teammate Mike Stys and has put all of its proceeds from the last four years into renovations to the Beech Street basketball courts at Sheridan-Emmett Park in Manchester.
With the those renovations concluding last month, tonight’s earnings will go toward the launch of a free youth summer league at the courts, as well as ongoing park maintenance.
The evening consists of two high school basketball games and an alumni game. Play begins at 6 p.m. with the inaugural girls’ high school game and is followed by the alumni game and the boys’ high school game. Both prep games will feature some of New Hampshire’s best high school players while the alumni game offers a slew of collegiate athletes from the Granite State and around New England.
Tickets are $15 at the door.
