FPU men eyeing NE-10 playoff spot

It’s tuneup time for the Southern New Hampshire University and St. Anselm College men’s basketball teams, who have locked up spots in the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs.

But it’s desperation time for their Granite State NE-10 brethren from Franklin Pierce University. On the final night of the league season, the Ravens must win and receive some help in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Here’s the scenario for FPU: At 9-11, the Ravens currently sit tied with Merrimack for sixth in the NE-10’s Northeast Division. The division’s top five teams qualify. The Ravens have lost twice to Merrimack, so they would lose a tiebreaker with the Warriors. Thus, FPU must beat 10-10 Bentley in its home finale in Rindge (7:30 p.m. tipoff), then hope Merrimack loses at St. Michael’s.

No such worries exist on River Road or on the Hilltop.

SNHU is 16-4 (19-6 overall) and has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Northeast. St. Anselm is 14-6 (17-7 overall) is the No. 2 seed. The Penmen go for their 20th win in Worcester tonight against Assumption, while the Hawks host Stonehill.

Both SNHU and St. Anselm, as the top two seeds, receive a first-round bye and will host quarterfinal games on Sunday afternoon. The first-round games are set for Friday night, all at the home of the higher seeds.

All three schools’ women’s teams conclude their regular seasons tonight, as well, with 5:30 games. Franklin Pierce (12-8, 16-9 overall) has already qualified for the league tournament, St. Anselm (7-13, 9-16) is still alive for a spot and SNHU (5-15, 11-16) has been eliminated.
