Police in a Massachusetts city say a Level 3 sex offender is accused of stealing a New Hampshire couple’s minivan with a 20-month-old daughter in the back seat from outside a local courthouse.

John Guilfoil, a spokesman for the Woburn, Mass., police department, said the child’s mother and her boyfriend, who are residents of Nashua, were at Woburn District Court Friday afternoon to attend a proceeding when they said they let a man they claim to have known only for a few days keep an eye on their car, with their 20-month-old daughter inside.

The couple told police that when they left the courthouse, the man, identified as Victor Baez, 36, of Worcester, Mass., was gone with their child and minivan.

Guilfoil said the vehicle with the child inside was found about 45 minutes later.

Woburn police are not releasing yet where Baez went or why he stole the vehicle in the first place, but Guilfoil said the investigation is ongoing.

“We are also unable to release the names of the individuals from New Hampshire at this time,” said Guilfoil. “They are not facing any charges at this time. The investigation continues, and more information could be forthcoming later in the week.”

Guilfoil said the infant was taken to a Massachusetts hospital to be evaluated as a precaution, and the state’s Department of Children and Families is investigating.

Baez was arrested by Woburn police and charged with kidnapping of a child, receiving stolen property (motor vehicle), reckless endangerment of a child with risk of serious injury and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Baez was held over the weekend in jail, pending an arraignment proceeding today in Woburn District Court.

Guilfoil said Sunday that Baez is listed as a Level 3 sex offender in Massachusetts, in connection with an offense that occurred in Worcester, Mass., in 2004.
