Former Claremont Middle School PTO treasurer indicted on check-cashing charge

NEWPORT — A former member of the Claremont Middle School Parent Teacher Organization has been indicted by a Sullivan County Grand Jury on one count of unauthorized taking or transfer.

Rebecca Remick, 40, of 35 Citizens St., Claremont, was arrested in July on a charge of felony theft for allegedly exercising unauthorized control of more than $2,000 in Claremont Middle School PTO funds.
..
Last week she waived her right TO an arraignment on the indictment in Sullivan County Superior Court in Newport and entered a plea of not guilty.

The charge carries a penalty of seven-and-half to 15 years in prison and a $4,000 fine.
..
According to the indictment, Remick allegedly wrote and cashed several checks at the Claremont Savings Bank between Sept. 2013 and March 2014 from a PTO checking account while acting in her capacity as treasurer of the PTO and used the money for personal use.
..
The nine checks ranged in value from $50 to $350 and totaled $2,019.90.

Remick was a member of the PTO at the time of the alleged thefts. An investigation into Remick began in April when SAU 6 officials notified Claremont police of their concerns.
..
In July, Police Chief Alex Scott said Remick was cooperative with authorities during the investigation and has reimbursed the PTO for the missing funds.

Remick is postmaster at the U.S. Post Office on Broad Street.
..
She went on leave following her arrest.
