NEWPORT — A Claremont man accused of molesting two children, ages 1 and 4, and making child pornography pleaded guilty in Sullivan County Superior Court on Wednesday.
Kevin Blood, 26, was sentenced to 25 years to life by Superior Court Judge Brian Tucker after Blood pleaded to four felony charges, two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and two counts of manufacturing child sex abuse images.
Tucker said a psychological evaluation found Blood fit for trial, but asked Blood about his mental health.
Blood said he has a mental health condition in which he hears “voices in his head” on a “constant” basis. “I take medicine for it,” Blood said, saying he doesn’t hear the voices if he takes his medication.
Sullivan County attorney Marc Hathaway said the abuse took place during unsupervised visits Blood and his wife had with the two girls in November.
The Antrim couple who had custody of the children and reported the abuse to Antrim police in November have adopted the children.
Hathaway detailed two video recordings in which Blood sexually abused each girl and said if the case went to trial a total of 14 videos would be entered as evidence.
The victim’s new adoptive father gave a victim impact statement before the sentencing. He said the oldest child has a sexual abuse counselor and suffers behavioral problems as a result of the abuse.
“It will affect her for life,” he said. “Kevin has scarred them forever. … We’ll be living it for the rest of our lives.”
Blood was sentenced to two concurrent 25 years to life sentences in state prison for the aggravated sexual assault charges. On the two counts of manufacturing child sex abuse images, he was given two suspended sentences of 10 to 20 years in state prison. Those sentences are suspended for 50 years pending good behavior.
Wife gets prison
Blood and his wife, Ashley Blood, 26, were arrested by Claremont police Dec. 5 after an 11-day investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse against the couple.
Kevin Blood was indicted on seven charges by the grand jury in December, two counts of manufacturing of child sex abuse images and five counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault charges on the two victims between Nov. 1 and Nov. 25.
In July, Ashley Blood was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison at a plea and sentencing hearing.
In December, she was indicted on two counts of manufacturing images or video of child pornography, and one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault. Later she was indicted on an additional count of aggravated felonious sexual assault.
The Bloods are now both registered sex offenders, have been placed on lifetime supervision and are prohibited from contacting the victims and having any unsupervised contact with minors.
