Sophomore Sam Strombehn’s goal with 6 seconds to play broke down Bishop Guertin’s defense and gave defending Division I state champ Hanover a 1-0 victory in the Division I boys’ soccer opener for both teams Friday in Hanover.
Strombehn toom a pass from junior Ian Caldwell at the top of the box on the left-hand side and drilled a shot into the upper corner, Hanover coach Rob Grabill said.
Hanover struggled to break down the Cardinals’ rigid defenses, Grabill said. BG goalkeeper Ryan Schweizer made eight saves.
Grabill was pleased with his young team, which lost eight starters from last season. “We’re trying to replace 78 percent of our goals from last year,” he said.
“They stayed very patient. They didn’t panic,” Grabill said. “It was very satisfying in that sense.”
Hanover goalkeeper Conrad Mitchell was not called upon to make a save. BG had no corner kicks.
“It was a tactically brilliant game,” Grabill said of Guertin’s defensive game plan.Derryfield 2, Pittsfield 1: The Cougars took a two-goal lead but had to hold on late to earn the win in the season opener for both. Parker Blaisdell headed in Tucker Ormiston’s cross in the 28th minute to put Derryfield up, 1-0. Seven minutes after halftime, Blaisdell set up Joe Costa for Derryfield’s second.
Pittsfield drew one back in the 74th minute as Xentius Cyr scored unassisted. Pittsfield threatened to equalize, but goalkeeper Drew Johnson (five saves) deflected a shot that was ticketed for the top right corner, and Derryfield saw the win out. Colby Clark had seven saves for Derryfield.
Pembroke 3, Plymouth 2: In a Division II opener in Pembroke, the Spartans rallied from a 2-1 deficit on late goals by Justus Turk (65th minute) and Jeremy Caruso (79th minute). Caruso’s goal was his second of the game. Tyler Mersch and Ian Barker scored for Plymouth.
