Winners Announced for 10th Annual Hampton Beach Talent Competition
Hampton Beach, NH - Hampton Beach has been bringing local talent to the Seashell Stage for a decade now. The talent show, which never disappoints, draws talented singers from the northeast and Canada. Sunday night the semi-finalists took the stage for the finals in the Junior (up to age 18) and Senior (over 18) divisions to wrap up the competition that is now in its 10th year.
The winner of the Senior Division was Cavelle-Nell Romeo from Queens, New York. Cavelle-Nell, who was born in the Caribbean and has a 5-Octave range, performed "And I Am Telling You" by Jennifer Hudson. She won a $500 cash prize. Second place went to the Peg Johnson from Rochester, NH. Peg is a member of an female group called the 'Bodacious Babes'. Her dazzling performance earned her a $300 cash prize with "I Am Woman". Third place and a cash prize of $200 went to Maria Albert from Danville, NH who performed an opera song, "O Mio Babbino Caro", from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi.
In the Junior Division, first place went to 15-year old Kaihla Laurent from Chicopee, Mass. with the song, "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables. Kaihla enjoys musical theatre and recently performed the role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Second place went to Elexis DuBose from Cherryfield, Maine. The 14-year old performed Carrie Underwood's "Two Black Cadillacs". Third place went to 11-year old Kayleigh MacFarland from Merrimack, NH. She took third place with a performance of "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin.
The competitors performed first in the semi-finals, which were held on Friday night, August 22 for the Junior Division and Saturday, August 23 for the Senior Division. The winners then went to the Finals, which were held Sunday night.
The judges were Cathy Pepin, former clerk of the Hampton Beach Village District, Hampton Beach Precinct Commissioner Maureen Buckley, Julie Leonard from the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce and special "celebrity" judge, Mike Livingston from the group the Continentals, who are well-known regular performers at the Hampton Beach Sea Shell Stage.
There were some very entertaining moments during the show, including some dancing during Nick DeFrancesco's performance of "Feeling Good" and Peg Johnson's "I Am Woman". The audience clapped and danced along during many of the performances and the talent impressed newcomers to the competition; audience members were overheard saying, "They are all so good!"
"Contestants are judged not only on their vocal ability, but also on their stage presence, audience response and overall entertainment value," said Glen French, competition organizer and show host.
The Finals show, which was sponsored by the Hampton Beach Village District, started at 7 p.m. on the Seashell Stage at Hampton Beach State Park and featured 2 dozen competitors. It wrapped up at 10 p.m.
