Senior News: Lifelong Learning Institute opens fall class registration today

The catalog describes the more than 144 available courses and their locations and gives information about registration and OLLI membership. An online catalog also can be found at olli.granite.edu.
Classes range from “Acupuncture Demystified” and “Adventures in Chinese Cuisine” to “Films: Foreign Classics” and “Reflections on New Hampshire Politics.” The classes do not involve any tests, grades or prerequisites.
Online and mail-in registration opens today; phone and walk-in registration opens Tuesday, Sept. 2. Classes start Monday, Sept. 22.

OLLI, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary at Granite State College, is a member-led organization that provides learning opportunities and social activities for people 50 and older. Free health tests offered in Manchester, Nashua
The Way to Well Health Tour, which travels the country delivering free health tests, education and consultations to adults 18 and older, is coming to Manchester and Nashua.
A collaboration among Walgreens, AARP and National Urban League, the tour features free preventive and early detection health services that provide a baseline status of overall health.
The health tour will be at three Walgreens locations:
• Manchester: Wednesday, Sept. 3, noon to 6 p.m., 227 S. Main St.
• Manchester: Thursday, Sept. 4, noon to 6 p.m., 606 Valley St.
• Nashua: Friday, Sept. 5, noon to 6 p.m., 283 Main St.
The free tests, valued at more than $100, include total cholesterol levels, glucose levels, blood pressure and a comprehensive weight assessment test. The tour's certified wellness staff also will assess potential risks for cancer, heart disease and diabetes based on personal health information.
The testing process will take about 20 minutes. Results will be ready immediately and will be explained during an on-site consultation with a Walgreens' pharmacist or one of the wellness staff. No insurance is necessary, and insurance will not be billed.
The tour also will provide resources and incentives to give people support and motivation to make healthy choices every day.

Maple Suites donates supplies to Dover schools
DOVER — Maple Suites senior living community and Profile Bank completed a monthlong school-supply drive to raise awareness and collect school supplies for Dover elementary school children in need.
During a presentation, a truckload of school supplies was given to the principals at Horne Street School, Woodman Park Elementary School and Garrison School.
BEDFORD — The Bedford Seniors will resume its monthly meetings at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Bedford Presbyterian Church.
The group plans a year of entertainment, trips, potluck and catered luncheons and a followup to its “Hollywood Rejects 2: Talented People Need Not Apply” show.
Trips already on the schedule:
• Oct. 7: Cranberry harvest in Plymouth, Mass. The $79 fee includes a tour of the bogs and the process of bringing the cranberries to the table, lunch at Isaac’s Restaurant on the Plymouth waterfront and transportation.
• Oct. 22: “My Sinatra” concert with Cary Hoffman at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The $79 fee includes the performance, a luncheon buffet, $10 slot play and transportation.
AARP driving class offered at several sites
The September schedule has been set for the AARP Smart Driver course, a classroom refresher course designed for drivers 50 and older, but open to any age licensed driver.
