DERRY — After two batches of mosquitoes recently tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), town officials said Friday they plan to begin a spraying program early next week.

Based on test results, spraying for mosquitoes is scheduled to begin in various locations in Derry on Tuesday. Dragon Mosquito Control, the town contractor for the program, will spray from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Town of Derry Health Department.

As students return to school later next week, acting Town Administrator Larry Budreau said the spraying will be coordinated with the Derry Cooperative School District and Pinkerton Academy.

“The town proactively budgets for a spraying program to address situations like this one,” said Budreau. “We have a strong partnership with the schools to share in the costs, as well as to promote prevention with residents.”

EEE is an illness caused by a virus that can be spread to people through mosquito bites. Those people infected with the virus can experience a range of illness, from flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache and sore throat, to more serous symptoms, such as coma and death, the release said.

Officials said the decision to spray is one of several actions to prevent human infection.

Spraying will occur on Tuesday at the following locations: Barka School, Derry Village School, East Derry School, Grinnell School, Hood School, South Range School, West Running Brook School, Alexander-Carr Park, Don Ball Park, MacGregor Park, Rider Fields, Veterans Field, Pinkerton Academy and Pinkerton Practice Field, the release said.

People may not be present during spraying and all locations will be closed on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until Wednesday at 5 a.m, according to the release.
