Mixing it up in the beer aisle

The sign said to choose six different beers for a mixed six-pack at $10.99, so I did.

You know the sign I mean, the one at the end of the beer aisle at Hannaford, over the shelves of various and sundry types of single-bottle beer and cider. Here’s what my six-pack looked like:Leinenkugel Summer Shandy: Pale wheat beer, with a large foamy head. The palate is late, with medium acidity, light body and intense flavors of lemon and wheat, dry lemonade, good balance and a long finish. Perfect for a long, hot summer day.

Rounder Belgian Style Pale, Blue Moon Expressionist Collection: Beer brewed with hibiscus and orange peel. This one is amber, medium-light in hue, with a huge, can, frothy head in a nose of light malt, mostly bread. It has medium-plus body, medium acidity and strong flavors of caramel, bread, wheat. There is a light bitterness and the malt stays with you through a long finish.

Leinenkugel Oktoberfest German Style Märzen: Light amber, off white/light head, and a very light nose with just a few hints of malt. Medium body, medium-minus flavor intensity, late malt, hints of spice, and low bitterness.Shock Top Belgian White: Belgian-style wheat ale brewed with citrus peels and coriander. Pale yellow, cloudy beer with determination under a foamy white head. Hence of citrus on the nose. The palate is balanced, with good acidity and an integrated flavor mix of citrus and wheat. Medium-like finish. Another good one for a hot summer day.

Sam Adams Light: The label tells me it was a two-year process to create this beer., And this is the first time I’ve tried it. Pale amber in the class, under a stitch just off-white foamy head. The nose is a mix of citrus and light malt, with each taking turns at being more prominent. The palate is light, with malt predominating, but the bitterness from the hops is very much present at the same time. A light beer with more flavor than most light beers out there.

Long Trail Ale: Also a light amber in color, but this time with a light tan frothy head, medium-size and lasting. The nose is all malt with bread and hints of molasses. This Vermont brew is medium-bodied with a rich flavor profile of malt, including bread, hints of molasses, intense hops bitterness that lasts all the way through a long finish.


Next Week: It’s still August, but the Oktoberfest beers are reaching the shelves. We’ll take a look at what will be going on soon in Germany — and in much of the rest of the world as the temperature starts to cool into the early fall.
