'Chicken' arrested at Londonderry parade

New Hampshire Union Leader

A man wearing a chicken costume was arrested for reportedly harassing the New Hampshire governor and a U.S. senator at the Old Home Day parade in Londonderry on Saturday.

The man was Michael Zona, 23, of Manchester. Zona, a state Republican Party staff member, was arrested for disorderly conduct at the parade, where he was allegedly harrassing Gov. Maggie Hassan and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, both Democrats. It’s not clear what Zona was doing to get him arrested.

Zona said he was trying to draw attention to Shaheen’s public appearances.

“I believe Senator Jeanne Shaheen should be holding town halls and I have a First Amendment right to express that point of view,” Zona said in a written statement provided to Lauren Zelt, a spokesperson for NHGOP. “I wasn’t bothering anyone. I wasn’t disturbing anyone. In fact, I got a good deal of encouragement from people along the parade route.”

Zona was released on personal recognizance bail and has a court date set at 10th Circuit Court-District Division-Derry on Sept. 8.

This isn’t the first appearance of the chicken on a campaign trial. It also paid a visit to a Shaheen campaign event in Keene last Thursday where the person in the suit held a sign stating “Jeanne Shaheen too chicken for Town Halls.”
