Defense was largely optional Friday night, but four Patriots turnovers made the difference in New England’s 42-35 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

New England is 1-1 in the preseason. Philadelphia, coached by Manchester, N.H., product Chip Kelly, is 0-2. The Pats’ next preseason game is Friday, Aug. 22 at home against Carolina.

The Pats turned picks by Nate Ebner and Duron Harmon into points, as all three New England quarterbacks had good nights.

Things didn’t start well for Tom Brady and the Patriots. After Brady and most of the first-team offense drive 50 yards in nine plays and knocked on the door of th end zone, Philadelphia’s Cary Williams intercepted a Brady pass intended for Steve Maneri, who never turned around to look for the ball. Williams ran 77 yards, nearly untouched, and have the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

But Brady and backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led the Pats to a 21-7 lead.

Brady connected with Kenbrell Thompkins om a 15-yard pass, capping a nine-play, 77-yard drive to even things early in the first. 7-7. 9:51

Brady was 8 of 10 in his two series for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

New England ran 18 plays before Philadelphia touched the ball, and things didn’t get any better for the Eagles as the first play from scrimmage, a pass from Nick Foles to Ifeanyi Momah, was knocked loose by Pats linebacker Donta Hightower. Tommy Kelly recovered the fumble. The Eagles had held ball eight seconds.

Garoppolo came in and led a four-play, 28 yard drive ending in a 15-yard pass to James Develin for a 14-7 lead.

Garoppolo’s second drive, 13 plays for 75 yards, ended with a four-yard TD pass to Brandon LaFell, to make it 21-7.

Garoppolo was 6-for-12 for 72 yards and two TDs.

But Kelly’s Eagles came back. Arrelious Benn blocked a Ryan Allen punt with 6:04 to go in the second quarter and Philadelphia recovered at the New England 31. A four-play drive ended with a Foles 4-yard pass to Zach Ertz for the TD and a 21-14 Pats lead. Foles was 8-for-10 and 81 yards and a 1 TD

Mark Sanchez the led Philly on a five-play, 61-yard drive, all in the air, to tie the game just before half. A six-yard pass to Momah bounced off his hands and into the arms of Benn, who made the catch and a 21-21 score at halftime.

The Pats began second half with a DuRon Harmon interception of Sanchez at the Philly 45. Harmon returned the ball to the 12, and third-string QB Ryan Mallett took over. On third and 4 from the Eagles’ 6, Mallett found all receivers covered but tucked it away and scored for a 28-21 lead.

But Sanchez led Philly right back on an 80-yard drive in 10 plays, capped by a five-yard pass to Damaris Johnson, and the game was tied 28-28

New England, however. came right back. Roy Finch scored from 10 yards out to cap a six- play, 80- yard drive and the Pats led 35-28. Sanchez was 11-for-12 for 117 yards, two TDs and an interception.

Momah fumbled again in the third quarter, and Malcolm Butler came up with it after forcing the fumble for New England. The Pats ook over on the Eagles 28 . Three plays later, Mallett connected with Brian Tyms for a 17-yard TD and a 42-28 score.

Henry Josey took in a 27-yard catch and run from Barkley to end a 77-yard drive to make the score 42-35 late in the third.
