Community fundraisers for families of teen killed in Unity crash

UNITY — Friends are rallying around the families of the teens involved in a devastating car crash.

Claremont teens Brittany Bailey, 18, Brandon Pete Rock, 17, and Jonathan Michael Varnum Jr., 17, were killed when their car hit a tree on West Unity Road last Sunday. The sole survivor, 17-year-old Selena Carrier of Claremont, is listed in fair condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

“It’s just been really hard. No parent should have to bury their child and have to handle the financial anguish as well as the grief,” said Bailey’s cousin, Shawna Buckwold of Plainfield.

Buckwold started a fundraiser on YouCaring.com to help Bailey’s family pay for funeral expenses. She is also working to set up a memorial fund for her cousin.

“She was just an outgoing girl who had her whole life in front of her,” Buckwold said of Bailey, who had graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont in June.

Rock and Varnum were to be seniors at Stevens High this fall; fundraisers have been started for both on GoFundMe.com.

Brandon Rock had worked at Whelen Engineering Company in the powder coating department, according to his obituary. “He enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, pool, loud music, mini golf and going to the driving range, movies and late-night Denny’s runs with his cousins and friends as well. He loved spending time with family and friends and just could never get enough time with everyone.”

A GoFundMe.com fund has also been started to help Carrier’s family pay for her medical expenses.

Services for all three teens are planned at the Stringer Funeral Home on Broad Street in Claremont.

Calling hours for Varnum are today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A time of sharing is planned for 8 p.m.

Calling hours for Rock are Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. with a memorial service starting at 3 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory at Claremont Savings Bank, care of Brandon Pete Rock Memorial Fund

Funeral services for Bailey are Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
