Whole Foods confirms Bedford store will be on Wayfarer property

BEDFORD — Whole Foods Market, the Austin, Texas-based health food grocery chain, has officially announced its new store in Bedford will be located at 121 South River Road, site of the former Wayfarer Inn.

Heather McCready, public relations manager for Whole Foods’ North Atlantic region, based out of Cambridge, Mass., said on Wednesday that the store is scheduled for a late-2015 opening, but could not give a more specific timeframe, citing that the company is “still very early in the process” of setting up shop in Bedford.

Speculation began earlier this month that Whole Foods would open a location in Bedford on the Wayfarer property, following a press release from the company on July 30 citing its intentions to open a store in town, and when the planning office added a mockup to the project file of the proposed shopping center, which included a Whole Foods. The Planning Board confirmed the news Monday night when it passed a waiver for developer TFMoran for a setback from the store.

The Bedford location will be a 40,000-square-foot store and is set to employ approximately 150 full- and part-time workers. “Those are jobs we will mostly be hiring right there in the community,” McCready said.

Whole Foods will be the anchor store of the property, which will be called the John Goffe Plaza. It will be the second Whole Foods location in New Hampshire after Nashua, which is opening on Aug. 19. A third store is slated to open in Portsmouth in 2016.

“We have been eager to respond to strong demand for stores in ... New Hampshire for a long time,” said Laura Derba, Whole Foods’ regional president, in a press release last month. “Going from zero locations in New Hampshire to three in two years has been truly exciting for us.”
