It’s all over for Dover Legion, eliminated from Northeaster Regional tourney

Dover was eliminated from the American Legion Northeast Regional baseball tournament after a 7-5 loss to Essex, Vt., in Middletown, Conn., Friday.

Dover lost to Rocky Hill-Cromwell-Portland (Conn.) 9-6 Thursday and Friday’s loss meant an early exit in the double elimination tourney. Dover finishes its season at 18-7.

Dover led 1-0 early and scored four runs late, but could not overcome Essex to keep itself alive Friday.

Jordan Goss (2-for-4, two RBIs), Aaron Denis (1-for-5, two RBIs), Jacob Bishop (2-for-4) and Anthony Lupi (2-for-3) led the Dover offense.

Dover made it a game with four runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5.

Bishop singled and Lupi and Jared Gagne both walked to open the inning with the bases loaded. Ryan Cordeiro drew a one-out walk to bring in a run.

Denis reached on an error to score Lupi and Goss drove home two more on a fielder’s choice to tie the game before Essex reliever Zach Roy closed the door.

Essex managed single runs in the seventh and eighth to take a 7-5 lead.

Crodeiro singled for Dover with two outs in the ninth, but Roy struck out Denis to end the game.

Dover reliever Kevin Gould took the loss, working three innings after starter Robert Sheldon threw the first five.

Ryan Hayden opened the game with a single for Dover and Cordeiro moved him over with a bunt. Denis doubled to left field to score Hayden to put Dover up 1-0, but Essex pitcher Jacob Benson induced two groundouts to end the inning.

Essex took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Essex pounded out four hits and took advantage of a Dover error in the frame to build the lead.

Essex added three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1 on three more hits and another Dover error.
