Pair from Newport charged with credit card fraud in Londonderry
LONDONDERRY — A pair of Newport residents are facing a long list of criminal charges this week after allegedly using counterfeit gift certificates and stolen credit cards to purchase $1,000 worth of fireworks in Londonderry last month.
Cassie Magoon, 28, and Giovanni Brown, 23, were arrested on Londonderry police warrants on Thursday and Friday.
Magoon was taken into custody by Newport police shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Brown was arrested early Friday afternoon.
Both were charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, attempt to commit credit card fraud and multiple counts of conspiracy to commit a crime.
Detective Christopher Olson said a warrant has also been issued for an unnamed third suspect, though an arrest hadn’t been made as of late Friday afternoon.
On July 9, sales clerks at both Alamo Fireworks, 6 Londonderry Road, and TNT Fireworks, 10 Nashua Road, reported incidents of suspicious activity to the police.
Olson said the three are believed to have “scanned in stolen credit card information onto gift cards,” which were then used to purchase fireworks at the two stores.
Descriptions of the trio given by the sales clerks, as well as prior police records and mug shots, helped police track down the alleged offenders.
Bail for both Magoon and Brown was set at $6,000 each.
They are both due to appear in Derry Circuit Court on Sept. 2 at 8:15 a.m.
