Bedford Hannaford offers help to MB workers

BEDFORD — In what is being seen as an act of solidarity with their fellow grocery workers, the 4 Jenkins Road location of Hannaford supermarket is offering part-time work to Market Basket employees who have had hours cut.

A handwritten sign outside the store reads: “Market Basket Employees: Let us help you through this difficult time. Hannaford is hiring temporary help for the remainder of the boycott. Inquire within for details.”

The offer comes on the heels of the latest blow in the saga of the Tewksbury, Mass.-based supermarket chain: On Thursday, Market Basket said it was cutting work hours for 8,000 part-time employees across New Hampshire. The action followed a company directive to slash payroll to deal with poor sales in recent weeks.

Jo Deckert, of Amherst, was shopping at the Jenkins Road Hannaford store on Friday afternoon. Deckert said she had been at the Milford Market Basket store the day before to see how the workers were doing.

“Two full-time employees were there, saying that they have hours this week, (but) all the part-time employees have no hours as of yesterday,” Deckert said.

Deckert said it’s a nice gesture by Hannaford to offer employment to Market Basket workers.“Market Basket employees need a paycheck, and they didn’t choose to leave, it’s just the part-timers were given no hours,” she said. “I think it’s fine for Hannaford to offer them (work).”“I would just love to see the miracle happen, and have Arthur T. somehow buy (the company) and it all go back to normal,” Deckert said.

Charles Denton, of Mont Vernon, called the offer “a very nice gesture to people who have reduced paychecks or no paychecks right now.”
