Goundbreaking for women’s prison scheduled for Aug. 18

CONCORD — The groundbreaking ceremony for the new $38 million women’s prison is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18.

The state of the art facility will replace the existing women’s prison in Goffstown and is scheduled to be completed in October 2016. It will enable the state to house all female prisoners. Because of space issues, some female prisoners are now housed, under contract, at the Strafford County Jail.

The new prison, on the grounds of the men’s prison, will have four buildings within a secure perimeter. The main building will include a large health services area, programming and education area, indoor/outdoor visitation area, Correctional Industries area, and secure housing for higher custody inmates and unclassified newly admitted inmates.

There will be two stand-alone general population housing units and one minimum custody housing unit. One of the general population buildings will be designated as a wellness block, to provide services for inmates with mental health and substance abuse issues.

Corrections Commissioner William Wrenn said the new women’s prison is designed to provide female inmates with the programming, treatment and rehabilitation opportunities provided male inmates.
