His black heritage was uncovered in 1941 when he was denied a lieutenant commanderís commission in the Navy during World War II. Johnston had kept it a secret not only from the Keene community, but his own children. When the community found out, the family that was considered just as white as anyone else was treated as outcasts by some, no differently by others.
