State police: Man drowns on Ammonoosuc River

August 01. 2014 10:01PM

CRAWFORD'S PURCHASE - A man drowned in the Upper Falls portion of the Ammonoosuc River on Friday, according to state police.

Police said the man, whom they identified only as not being from New Hampshire, jumped 10 feet into a pool of swift, turbulent water adjacent to the falls. When he surfaced, he yelled for help, police said.

A relative of the man jumped in to try to help, but rough waters pushed him out of the pool into "quieter" waters, police said in a release. The victim resufaced about 15 to 20 yards away, but was not responsive, the release said.

He was retrieved from the water and taken to Littleton Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's identification was withheld while police continue notifying family members, the release said.
