Busy Tuesday at state Legion tournament

Umpire Jim Walsh of Hooksett is not interested in explaining his call to Brendan Sullivan of Sweeney Post 2 early in their game against Derry Post 9 last night at Holman Stadium in Nashua. NASHUA — Monday night’s American Legion state tournament game between Manchester’s Sweeney Post 2 and Derry Post 9 was suspended in the second inning with Sweeney leading 1-0.

The game is scheduled to resume today at 10 a.m. at Holman Stadium. The winner will face Dover in the double-elimination tournament’s championship game, which has tentatively been scheduled for today at 1 p.m.

According to Gary Webster, chairman for New Hampshire American Legion Baseball, the teams must be off the field no later than 5 p.m. because the Nashua Silver Knights of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League have a doubleheader at Holman tonight.

Nolan Flynn scored the game’s only run in the top of the second Monday. Flynn doubled, moved to third on a balk and scored on Aaron Mercereau’s infield groundout.

The game was suspended after a 30-minute lightning delay because of wet field conditions before Derry came to bat in the bottom of the second.

Dover (17-5 overall, 3-1 in the tournament) is seeking its first state championship since a Sam Fuld-led Dover team won it all in 2000. Sweeney (17-5, 3-1) is seeking its first state championship since 2007, and Derry (13-9, 3-1) last won the state championship in 1994.

The winner of this year’s tournament will advance to the Northeast Regional, which will be held in Middletown, Conn., from Aug. 7-11.

Rochester, which won last year’s state tournament, entered this year’s tournament with the best record in the state (16-2), but was eliminated after three games.

No team has won back-to-back American Legion state tournaments since Manchester’s Jutras Post in 1996-97.
