Thank a veteran on Saturday at Holderness barbecue

HOLDERNESS — Concerned Veterans for America this weekend will host a free “Thank a Vet” barbecue, expanding beyond an event it holds every Memorial Day in an effort to thank a greater number of veterans, according to organizers.

“We’re trying to make it a more regular occurrence,” said one of the organizers, Roger Wilkins.

“The idea is to thank all veterans and have a burger and a hot dog at the same time,” Wilkins said. “This is an attempt to remind folks that indeed it’s time to thank a vet, sit down and break bread with our Granite State heroes.”

The event will be held at the Pemigewasset Fish and Game Club at 295 Beede Road in Holderness on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Featured speakers at the event will include U.S. Army helicopter pilot Amber Barno, Gold Star Mother Natalie Healy and state Sen. Jeanie Forrester.

Barno is now a writer and commentator.

Her articles have been published by news media such as FoxNews.com, Forbes, The Hill, the Washington Examiner, the Daily Caller, the Blaze, the Commentator, the Federalist, on topics including national security, military, foreign policy, politics, women’s issues and veterans’ issues.

Barno is a military adviser with Concerned Veterans for America and National Security Policy Senior Fellow at the Independent Women’s Forum.

She served as an Army OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter pilot for almost eight years, seeing combat during deployments to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.

During her service as a pilot, Barno earned the title of Pilot-in-Command and Air Mission Commander.

According to the organization’s website, the mission of Concerned Veterans for America is to advocate for policies that will preserve the freedom and liberty that veterans proudly fought and sacrificed to defend.

The goal of the group, its site says, is to translate the experience, concerns and hopes of veterans and their families into a common vision of liberty and freedom.
