Derry Early Education Program to relocate

DERRY — The Derry Early Education Program (DEEP) will be relocating for the 2014-15 school year from Grinnell Elementary because of an increase in student enrollment and additional space needs, according to school officials.

The program serves children 3- to 5-years-old in the Derry Cooperative School District. DEEP is moving to its former home in Gilbert H. Hood Middle School, Superintendent of Schools Laura Nelson said Wednesday.

In addition, the Next Charter School, which currently occupies the former DEEP site, is relocating to West Running Brook Middle School to make room for the additional space needs of the preschool program, Nelson said.

“We have some moves, so it’s kind of like dominoes here,” Nelson said.

The preschool program experienced a recent surge in enrollment to go with a need for additional space, Nelson said.

Before being housed at Grinnell, the preschool program was located in Gilbert H. Hood Middle School, which was designed for the program, she added.

“We think that it will certainly provide ample space for our preschool,” Nelson said of the middle school. “It actually utilizes some space that we have in the district and allows us to provide for those needs that the preschool has grown into. We are looking forward to having ample space for that preschool program.”

DEEP currently serves 109 students, but administrators are anticipating more students will enroll before the start of school next month and increase enrollment to approximately 120 students, Nelson said.

The Next School is a high school program for grades 9 through 12, with an enrollment of about 45 students. It leases space from the school district, Nelson said.

Nelson said all of the moves should be made by the first to second week of August.

“We are in good shape,” she said. “We’ll have everything moved and ready to go well in time for school to start,” with the first day of school scheduled for Aug. 28.
