DERRY — The launch of a town councilor’s plan to use T-shirts to help revive Derry’s Space Town USA theme has encountered a slight problem.

Councilors recently discussed ways to promote Derry and spark economic development in town. One of the methods involved reviving the Space Town USA theme and using the image of famed astronaut Alan Shepard Jr. to attract visitors to Derry.

To help with the campaign, Councilor Al Dimmock earlier this month called on all of his fellow councilors to join him in wearing T-shirts displaying the Space Town USA theme at a council meeting. But Dimmock said during Tuesday night’s council meeting that he had ordered the seven shirts and, unfortunately, run into a size problem.

Dimmock said the shirt he received wouldn’t fit his large frame, and two other shirts were too small for fellow councilors Michael Fairbanks and David Fischer.

“I went and bought seven T-shirts and I have a problem,” Dimmock said. “Mike won’t fit into one, I won’t fit into one and neither will Dave. We have to find out where we can get several extra, extra large T-shirts.”

Dimmock then appealed to the public for help in finding the larger shirts.

Also during the meeting, Dimmock said he wanted to hear from the public on ways to promote Derry.

“Why would people want to come to Derry?” he asked.

Dimmock mentioned that former Town Administrator Carol Granfield had bumper stickers made to promote Derry. Borrowing from Granfield, Dimmock said he plans to have stickers printed that say, “Derry, the place to be.”

Dimmock made his comments at the close of the meeting and said he would like to hear about any promotional plans during the public forum segment of upcoming meetings.

“We need to do something to excite Derry into a place people want to be,” Dimmock said.
