Winchester roads ravaged by heavy rain

WINCHESTER - Town crews worked till 9 p.m. Wednesday to ensure all town roads were clear after Tuesday's heavy rains, said Town Administrator Shelly Walker Thursday.

“So far all of the roads are passable,” Walker said.

The rain started Tuesday around 9 p.m. with heavy down  pours that lasted till Wednesday afternoon, she said.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews were called out for evacuations and flooding and flooded basements, she said.

About a dozen roads were damaged, 93 homes were impacted with people stranded at 23 homes initially, Walker said.

The worst hit roads are Purcell Road and Old Westport Road.

Three homes at the top of Purcell Road are still only accessible by foot, she said.

“The pavement is just completely undermined, I believe that all the earth underneath it has been washed away,” Walker said.

A 150-foot stretch of Old Westport Road is missing, but the road is accessible through other roads, she said.

People were also stranded on Watson Road, Walker said. “The culvert was completely washed out and there was a piece of the road missing.”

Many roads are only passage by four-wheel drive vehicles, she said.

Walker and Select Board members have been out assessing the damage and meeting with state officials from the Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Services and the Department of Homeland Security on repairs and possible outside funding to help pay to repair the town roads.

Walker said there is no assessment yet on the total cost of repairing the storm ravaged roads.
