ROCHESTER — Next week, residents are invited to help others while enjoying a night of family fun.

The Rochester Police Benevolent Association will host a basketball game between officers and members of the world famous Harlem Wizards on Saturday, July 26 at the Rochester Community Center.

Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and the game will start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and can be purchased at the Rochester Police Department, Holy Rosary Credit Union branches in Dover, Rochester and Farmington or online at They will also be available at the door for $10.

Additionally, for each donation of a nonperishable canned or boxed food item, participants will receive a raffle ticket. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, concessions and Harlem Wizards merchandise.

Jandee Lawler, coordinator for Gerry’s Emergency Food Pantry, said donations will be put to good use.

“There always is a need during the summer,” Lawler said, adding that as schools are closed, many residents must find alternatives to the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs offered to schoolchildren.

Lawler said the pantry provided assistance to 328 Rochester residents, including about 200 families in June. She said there were 30 new families last month.

“About 30 percent of the people we serve are elderly and on a fixed income,” Lawler said, adding there are families of all sizes and many single people who seek help from the pantry.

Lawler said the pantry is always in need of donations, especially toiletries, canned vegetables, pasta, jams and jellies, peanut butter and alternatives like sun butter. She said the pantry has plenty of canned green beans.

“Right now, we’re giving out three cans of green beans per person,” Lawler said, adding people also get canned corn to offer a variety.

“Any fresh vegetables would be nice,” Lawler said.
