Ayotte expresses concerns about nuclear Iran in letter to Obama

July 15. 2014 8:12PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, on Tuesday expressed serious concerns that Iran may have the capability to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile by early 2015.

Ayotte expressed her concerns in a letter to President Obama on Tuesday. It was prepared with fellow Republican Marco Rubio of Florida and signed by 26 other Republican senators.

The letter urges Obama to address ICBM development during the present negotiations over Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Ayotte’s office quotes the U.S. intelligence community and Iran could have ICBM capability as early as next year, and that a ballistic missile is the preferred Iranian means of delivering a nuclear weapon. Iran has reportedly continued development of ballistic missiles while negotiating with the U.S. and other governments, her office said.

“An Iran with a nuclear weapons capability represents a grave threat to the United States and our allies, and an effective delivery system is a key element of a nuclear weapons capability,” the senators wrote. “We believe the administration should not conclude any nuclear accord with Tehran without addressing the threat that Iranian ballistic missiles could pose to our nation.”
