State Police Marine Patrol IDs Duncan Lake drowning victim

GILFORD — The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol Wednesday said the 65-year-old man who drowned in Duncan Lake in Ossipee Friday was a New York resident.

The Marine Patrol said Robert Madden, of Huntington Station, N.Y., was swimming across a cove on the lake at about 5 p.m. when he began to have difficulties. Friends and family members swam out to help, but Madden had gone under water shortly after he began to struggle.

He was found within 10 minutes of going under water.

When he was brought to shore, where Ossipee Fire and Rescue and Ossipee Police officers were waiting, efforts to resuscitate Madden were unsuccessful.
The matter is under investigation by the New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol.

Identification of the victim had been withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
