Conway car dealer turns heads with two-faced truck

This “two-faced truck” — actually two Ford F150's whose cabs were spliced together – continues to generate interest at Macdonald Motors in Center Conway. (JOHN KOZIOL/Union Leader Correspondent)

CONWAY — Macdonald Motors has some snazzy new Fords and Lincolns on its lot, but its most eye-catching, and head-scratching ride, is an old pickup truck that even when going backward always points forward.

“I call it my two-face truck,” said Bob Macdonald, recalling that years ago he took a 1986 Ford F150 with a rusty bed in trade. He parked the pickup in front of his business’s body shop.

One day — while running errands in his own 1987 F150 — he had an epiphany.

“I went to my body shop manager and I said I want to take out the two bodies," he said. "It took him quite a while, but he got it set up. The most expensive part was redoing the driveshaft.”

Road legal and state inspected, the resulting creation goes in only one direction at a time. Despite its two forward-looking ends, one is the front and has headlights, the other is the rear and has taillights.

“I take it to a lot of parades and people get a kick out of it,” said Macdonald. Although sometimes “if you pull up behind it, you’re a little scared” because it appears that the truck is traveling in reverse.

Macdonald said he hasn’t gotten any offers to buy the truck. He doesn’t really want to sell it, he said, but he might entertain an inquiry from Hollywood if the price is right.

“It brings quite a bit of attention,” said Macdonald, “and I’ve never had a negative (comment) about it at all.”

The truck “rides fine, no problems at all. It’s a nice truck with a good wheel base, and we keep it in good shape,” he said.
