NH Fisher Cats rally to top Trenton, 3-1

MANCHESTER - Right fielder Matt Newman's two-run single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning, his third hit of the night, lifted the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 3-1 win over the Trenton Thunder on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The Fisher Cats won their third straight game and ninth in their last 10 contests.

They improved to 40-45 for the season, while Trenton fell to 40-48.

New Hampshire's three-run rally in the eighth backed up an impressive pitching effort by the Fisher Cats.

Lefty Matt Boyd, back up from Double-A Dunedin, got the pitching in gear.

He gave up four hits and one run in his six innings, struck out nine and walked no one.

Casey Lawrence followed with two hitless innings and Gregory Infante closed it out with a save in the ninth.

The Fisher Cats rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to take control of the game.

K.C. Hobson walked to lead things off and went to second on a Michael Crouse ground out. Dalton Pompey's infield single moved Hobson up a base to give the Fisher Cats runners on first and third with one out.

A Jon Berti single to center scored Hobson to tie it at 1-1 and leave runners on first and second.

A wild pitch advanced the runners and Newman plated them both with his hit.

Ben Gamel accounted for the only run of the game off Boyd. Boyd got the first two batters out in the top of the third inning and then Gamel homered to right field.Boyd was 0-2 with an 8.31 earned run average in six starts with the Fisher Cats in May.He went six innings and allowed one hit and one run, but got no decision in a game at Reading on May 22.

He faced Binghamton on the road in his next start on May 27 and lasted one and two-thirds innings and allowed five hits and six runs.

Boyd was sent back to Dunedin after that and spent June there.

Fisher Cat right-hander Scott Copeland faces righty Eric Wooten when the teams close out the series this afternoon at 1:35.

Copeland is 5-6 with a 3.93 earned run average and Wooten checks in at 3-3 and 4.08.
