Inspection sticker violation leads to arrest of Mexican nationals in Washington

WASHINGTON -- A motor vehicle stop for an inspection sticker violation on North Main Street Thursday led to three arrests, including two on immigration violations.

The driver and his four occupants were returning home from a job site, the Unity Elementary School construction project, Washington Police Chief Steven Marshall said in a press release Friday.

Marshall stopped the vehicle on North Main Street around 4:17 p.m. on Thursday for an inspection sticker violation. During the stop, Marshall discovered the driver, Filiberto Rivera, 42, of Manchester and Dallas, Texas, was driving with an expired driver's license.

Marshall detained all five men in the vehicle with assistance from the Hillsboro, Newport and Croydon police departments, and the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, until identifications could be established.

Police determined two of the passengers were wanted by the Department of Homeland Security- Immigration and Customs Enforcement for immigration violations, Marshall said.

Brothers Erick Tinajero, 24, and Rolando Tinajero, 29, who are Mexican nationals living in Manchester, were arrested on a DHS-ICE detainer for investigation to determine whether they are subject to removal from the United States.

They were taken to the Sullivan County House of Corrections in Unity, pending transfer to a federal holding facility prior to a court appearance.

The driver, Rivera was charged with driving without a valid license and transporting an open container. He was released on a summons to appear in the Newport District Court in August.

Police gave the remaining occupants an opportunity to arrange for a ride home.
