Derry to replace 14 parking signs as part of downtown improvement effort

DERRY— As part of an ongoing effort to improve downtown, the town will replace some parking signs that are showing their age.

Councilors listened to a presentation by acting Administrator Larry Budreau last week and agreed to replace 14 signs.

“The general theme is to continue to promote the improvement and appearance of downtown,” Budreau said.

Headed east on Broadway, some of the parking signs are fading and “starting to grow weary,” Budreau said. And heading west on Broadway, other signs are obscured by trees, he added.
Councilor Al Dimmock raised the issue of the signs at a recent planning board meeting.

And at a council meeting earlier this month, Councilor Thomas Cardon said that he noticed some of the worn signs recently while he was in the downtown area.
Cardon said parking signs are deteriorating in the Wall Street area, and it’s difficult to see some of the ones on Broadway because they are blocked by tree leaves.

Councilors agreed to have the town check the condition of the various parking signs and report back. Budreau gave an update on the condition of the downtown parking signs at the June 17 meeting.
After a brief discussion, councilors agreed to replace the signs and approved the project. At the suggestion of Councilor Michael Fairbanks, the signs will be blue with a universal “P” for parking.

Fourteen new parking signs will be installed throughout the downtown area, pointing drivers to the East Broadway, Wall Street, McCallister Court, Abbott Court and Birch Street public parking lots, Budreau said. Fabrication cost is $31.25 per sign, for a total of $437.50.
“Pending timely receipt from the supplier, all of the signs should be installed in July,” Budreau said.
