Portsmouth teen facing more charges in accident that injured 2 women

HAMPTON — The Portsmouth teen who was allegedly intoxicated when he fell asleep at the wheel and struck two Hampton women is now facing four additional charges.

Hampton Deputy Police Chief Rich Sawyer confirmed Thursday that 17-year-old Remy Gross-Santos, who was booked for aggravated driving while intoxicated following the June 12 accident, has also had two charges of second-degree assault brought against him, in addition to counts of possession of drugs and transportation of alcohol by a minor.

“The alcohol and drug issues came about when we executed a search warrant on the vehicle as part of our ongoing investigation,” said Sawyer. “As we continued that investigation, we developed probable cause for a second-degree assault charges to be filed as well.”

Sawyer, who wouldn’t specify what types of alcohol and drugs were found in the 1992 Volvo station wagon driven by Gross-Santos, said the assault charges are typical in cases that involve injury due to impaired driving.

Gross-Santos had reportedly been drinking at a party the night before and was on his way to Portsmouth High School graduation rehearsal when he fell asleep, crossed over the other side of the road, and struck 69-year-old Karen Weinhold and 60-year-old Lisa Beaudry, who were out for an early-morning walk.

A Massachusetts General Hospital representative confirmed Beaudry was released on June 20, eight days after the accident, but Weinhold, who was airlifted from the scene, remains hospitalized at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Officials there did not immediately return a call for an update on her health status.
