HUDSON — Hudson will soon hire a new zoning administrator, selectmen agreed this week.
During Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting the board voted 4-1 in favor of advertising the vacant position. Selectmen Richard Maddox opposed the move.
Maddox said he was concerned about the town’s inspection and permit arrangement, which he felt would limit the new hire’s ability to shift between duties when required.
“Our inspections in town are stretched thin. There are many violations, and I just don’t see this getting better,” he said.
Over the past month or so, town officials had considered bringing the new zoning administrator across the street to the fire station.
Last August, staff from the town’s fire and building departments joined forces to man the town’s new Inspectional Services Office inside Hudson Town Hall. The department is tasked with regulating all construction, demolition and safety procedures in town and works jointly with the planning, zoning and engineering departments.
A building inspector, a fire inspector, a fire prevention officer and a permit technician staff the office.
This week, town engineer Laurie Stevens said that arrangement seems to be working well.
Following several discussions with Fire Chief Robert Buxton and Town Administrator Steve Malizia, Stevens said, “I think we should leave the zoning administrative position as is.”
Buxton agreed, noting that changing the current arrangement would be challenging for a fire department that’s already stretched thin.
“Our plate is very full right now, and if we were to take on code enforcement, we’d need some additional support,” the fire chief said.
Buxton noted that the Inspectional Services Department’s duties have increased by approximately 30 percent over the past year.
