Grant will bring more trees to Hudson's Benson Park

HUDSON — A grant from the Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) will bring shade and beauty to a barren hillside in Benson Park.

During Tuesday night’s Selectmen meeting, the board voted unanimously to accept a $12,100 grant from the nonprofit group. The ACT awards a limited number of grants to moderate-income communities each year, which are used to fund tree projects in public areas.

With the grant gratefully accepted by the town, volunteers from TD Bank will work on the park grounds in October, during TD Bank Tree Days.

Since 2011, the banking chain has sponsored the ACT, while giving local workers, their families and friends the chance to plant and maintain trees within their own communities.

Benson Park Committee chairman Harry Schibanoff said the town learned of the grant opportunity in early March and submitted an application by the end of that month.

Schibanoff said he’d initially hoped to obtain grants to plant trees in two areas of the park: a recently cleared area near an antique barn and the hillside separating the dog park from the new senior center facility.

Benson Park was awarded a grant for the site by the dog park.

“It’s an area that definitely needs some sprucing up,” Schibanoff said. “It’s our hope that all these new trees will provide some shade for the dogs, while also improving the view from the senior center.”

A walking trail runs along the site’s parameter, taking hikers from nearby Route 111 on a roundabout stroll into the park.

Selectman Rick Maddox said the park committee would clear the area of brush in advance to make way for the 40 or so new trees.

Schibanoff said the committee would be conferring with an area arborist to make sure the new plantings, ranging from American Mountain Ash to Blue Spruce, would be enjoyed by future generations.
