Lebanon's July 4 fireworks changed to end of August

LEBANON — An August fireworks show may be a new tradition for the city.

The End of Summer Celebration set for Aug. 28 includes a firework show at 8:45 p.m. at Storrs Hill Ski Area.

Landslides last summer caused by heavy rains led the Lebanon Recreation Department to postpone its traditional Fourth of July firework show until the end of August.

“Last year it was something we had done and combined with the Dancefest and farmers market,” said Lebanon Recreation Coordinator Krissy Flythe. “The flow of the evening went really well,” she added.

When planning for 2014, the recreation department sent out a survey.

Residents who responded to the survey overwhelmingly preferred an end of summer firework show over a Fourth of July one or didn't have a preference.

The Upper Valley region has several other Fourth of July shows for the public to attend, she said.

“There are other celebrations, five different celebrations going on the Fourth within 30 minutes of Lebanon. Instead of competing with other recreation departments surrounding Lebanon, let's support the other recreation departments and share the wealth,” Flythe said.

Holding the show after the Fourth has its benefits, she said. The city will be able to afford 20 percent more fireworks at the same price, lengthening the show another five minutes.

The End of Summer Celebration on Aug. 28 also includes the Lebanon Farmers' Market and the Battle of the Bands from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Colburn Park and the 4th Annual Dancefest at the Lebanon Mall from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
