CANDIA - For the last six years, Liquid Planet Water Park has offered plenty of children refreshing fun in the sun. This year, the popular summer attraction has added some new features that owner Kevin Dumont promises are sure to excite.

The most notable additions - which he said have been three years in the making - are the park's twin Shooting Star speed slides.

"They're 40 feet tall, and they're called vertical drop speed slides because you go straight down. They're designed for people that like to have the adrenaline pumping, and when you get up there and look down, it is scary," said Dumont. "Water Country has them, and they're called the Geronimos. We call them the Shooting Stars. You basically cross your arms and your legs and you can't even see where you're going at first, and before you know it you're at the end."

He also said all the park's slides were upgraded with roofing to help keep the sun off the heads of those waiting in line.

In addition, Liquid Planet has revamped its natural Caster Lake attraction, exchanging its inflatable rafts with more traditional wooden floats and slides.

"In the past, we had these inflatable rafts, and they were cool, but they were hard to get on and hard to get out of the water, so now have real dock systems with real ladders with a real slide and a real bench you can sit on, and it's closer to shore," said Dumont. "We did that so people didn't have to completely exhaust themselves trying to get from the sand out there, and then they can get out of the water easier and do all the things kids and adults like to do on docks.

"The park is growing up now, so it's more of a grown-up version of what we had, and it's way more guest friendly," he added.

The recent upgrades are only the beginning of what Dupont said he hopes is a bright future for Liquid Planet, which uses just 12 of its 125 acres.

"We have some surprises that we're not talking about, but let's just say our goal is to have a wave pool in the very near future," said Dumont. "It's no coincidence that that's our number one request from guests ... but when we do it, the one we're going to do is going to be pretty amazing. We're going to do some stuff that nobody else does with theirs, so it'll be worth the wait."

Of course, Liquid Planet continues to offer its twin 1,000-foot zip lines.

"We have the only two (zip lines) that are side-by-side in the state," said Dumont. "They've been our most popular attraction since we opened them three years ago. People just love them."

The park's nine-hole Galactic Mini Golf course recently received a face-lift as well.

"We basically themed each hole to a different planet, and it's all got different colors and carpeting, different obstacles," said Dumont. "It's just designed to be really, really fun and really colorful."

Refreshments, snacks and sweet treats are available for guests at The Lunch Pad and The Milky Way Cafe.

"We just signed a big contract with Hershey's," said Dumont. "They're going to be doing all our ice cream, so we're still going to have ice cream, but we're going to have a big dairy bar, so it will be even better than last year."

For those looking to give their children, ages 6 to 14, some added fun in the sun, Liquid Planet offers weekly day camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day from June 23 through Aug. 22.

"If you sign up for one of the first three weeks of camp, your son or daughter gets a free season pass," said Dumont.
