Historical Society to host walking tour in Laconia

Not long after their return home, New Hampshire soldiers who fought in and survived the Civil War soon found they missed a sense of camaraderie in their daily life. First gathering for informal meetings, regiments by the early 1870s were attending formal banquets, and by the mid-1870s, the New Hampshire Veterans’ Association was organized in Concord. Their aim was “simply to cherish those fraternal feelings engendered among men who devoted four of the best years of their lives for the maintenance of The Union,” said officials with the Laconia Historical and Museum Society. “The first general reunion and encampment took place in 1875 at the Riding Park in Manchester. In 1878, The NHVA held its second reunion and encampment — its first at Weirs Landing (Weirs Beach).” Marking that journey, and the construction of the Encampment Headquarters building at Lakeside Avenue in 1885, the historical society will host a walking tour through the grounds on Tuesday, June 20, beginning at 7 p.m. There is no fee.
