HUDSON — Two summer fundraisers will help the family of a Hudson girl who is battling cancer cope with continuous medical and travel expenses.

McKenzie Lowe, 12, will begin treatment for her rare brain tumor on June 23.

Lowe, whose tumor didn’t respond to chemotherapy and radiation, was granted permission by the Food and Drug Administration this past spring to receive an alternative treatment known as ANP, which has been used by Texas doctor Stanislaw Burzynski to treat brain tumors for the past several decades but has not yet been approved for general use.

Frank LaFountain, McKenzie’s grandfather, said her health remains pretty good and her spirits are high.

“She’s definitely a fighter,” he said this week.

On June 24, Kendall Pond Pizza will hold a fundraiser for McKenzie at both its Hudson and Windham locations. The pizza shops will donate a portion of all dine-in and take-out sales to the Lowe family that day.

A community-wide fundraiser is being planned for July 12 at the Hudson Fish and Game Club, family friend Kim Frenette said this week.

Though the Burzynski Clinic is providing McKenzie’s medications at no cost to the family, Frenette said it will still cost the Lowe family approximately $15,000 a month for medical supplies, consultations, nursing and administrative fees that aren’t covered by insurance.

Tickets to the July fundraiser are $10 per adult or $35 per family. Doors open at 2 p.m. with festivities to continue through 10 p.m.

The afternoon and evening will include raffles, a light buffet, kids’ activities, dancing and music.

Those wishing to donate items for raffles and the silent auction may contact Frenette at 566-7221 or LaFountain at 508-498-8057.

Check donations made to Friends of McKenzie Lowe may be brought to Digital Federal Credit Union, located at 257 Lowell Road in Hudson.
