PLAISTOW — A 71-year-old Hampstead man was arrested on charges he sexually assaulted a young girl over the course of a year and a half, police said.
Walter Carroll, 86 Main St., was arrested Thursday around 6:30 p.m. by Hampstead police.
Carroll is accused of sexually assaulting the girl several times between Sept. 1, 2012, and Jan. 31, 2014, beginning when she was about age 9, according to court complaints.
He is being held at the Rockingham County Jail in Brentwood.
Carroll made a brief court appearance via video in 10th Circuit Court, Plaistow Division, on Friday morning. He asked Judge Sharon DeVries to delay his arraignment so he could apply for a court-appointed lawyer.
“I don’t understand all these procedures,” Carroll said to the judge.
DeVries ordered that Carroll’s bail remain at $50,000 cash until the arraignment resumes on Monday afternoon.
Police said that Carroll had been under investigation for several weeks. The girl is known to Carroll, police said.
“This arrest was the result of an aggressive investigation over the last several weeks, headed up by Detective Robert Kelley,” Hampstead police Lt. John Frazier said in a released statement.
Court complaints say that Carroll allegedly made the girl watch a pornographic movie at least twice during the assaults. He is also accused of locking her bedroom door on one occasion and pinning her down against her will in order to assault her, a court complaint says.
Carroll faces 14 charges total. They include nine counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, two counts of felonious sexual assault, one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The aggravated felonious sexual assault charges are Class A felonies, each punishable by up to 10 to 30 years in state prison. The felonious sexual charges are punishable by 3½ to 7 years in prison.
No pleas have been entered.
