Manchester man dies in Virginia highway crash

A Manchester man died Wednesday morning when the tractor-trailer he was operating rear-ended another rig on Interstate 81 South in Staunton, Va.

Bryan P. Ingalls, 55, died at the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

Ingalls, who was transporting paper, was traveling south in the right lane behind another tractor-trailer that was carrying drums of liquid chocolate. The first truck slowed for traffic and, according to a preliminary police report, Ingalls failed to slow down and rear-ended it.

The impact caused Ingalls' truck to jackknife and he died in the crash. The other driver was not injured. Both were using seat belts, according to police.

The crash caused the first tractor-trailer to spill its contents and rupture the drums of liquid chocolate.

Police shut down all southbound lanes, diverting traffic, for seven hours while the crash was investigated and the scene cleared.

The Virginia State Accident Reconstruction Team and Motor Carrier Unit was assisting Trooper M.C. Brill with the crash which remains under investigation.
