Costs increasing for school maintenance garage

SALEM — Bids for a planned maintenance garage at the high school have come in slightly higher than expected due to some soil issues on the site.

On Tuesday night, the school board approved the sub-contracting bids for the maintenance garage. The bids added up to a total project cost of $241,615, which is about $15,000 more than was slated for the project in May.

“Much of that increase is the result of site work we’ve learned needs to be done to construct the garage in the location we had originally planned,” said Superintendent Michael Delahanty.

Because of the soil issues on the site, the low bid for the site work came in at $68,500, about $39,000 over what was initially budgeted.

The board also approved bids for the pre-fabricated metal building itself, foundation work, electrical work, HVAC, and fire panels.

The biggest savings in the sub-contracting bids came through the electrical work, which was initially slated at $30,000.

The winning electrical bid from Daniels Electric of Gilford was $11,635.

District facilities manager Jack Messenheimer said the bids came in low because the district decided to go with overhead rather than underground utilities.

Board member Pamela Berry said she was in favor of saving money, but asked if it might be better to put the utilities underground.

“We can explore that and can opt for that,” said Delahanty. “We can ask the low bidder to provide an alternative for underground utilities and we can bring it back to the board.”

Messenheimer said work on the project will take place this summer, with the HVAC and fire panel portions hopefully taking place in August or September.
