Boscawen family escapes fast-moving fire

BOSCAWEN — A family, their dogs and two cats escaped a fast-moving fire Tuesday night that quickly swept through their home.

A fire broke out in the garage of the two-story home at 169 King St. at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to Fire Chief Ray Fisher, who said the cause of the fire, while still undetermined, is not thought to be suspicious.

A middle-aged woman, who Fisher would not identify – lived in the home with her two children and their pets. The family and several neighbors called it in at about the same time, and it didn’t take long for fire and rescue crews to arrive.

But the 60-year-old house was a complete loss, Fisher said.

Fire crews made a strong attempt at saving the home, but the fire spread from the garage to the home almost immediately, he said.

“Considering we got there so quickly, it is surprising that it went that quickly,” Fisher said.

“The house is in the main section of town, other people must have seen it. If that had been called in a few minutes earlier, we might have been able to save it.”When Fisher and his firefighters arrived, though, “the garage was already down and there was a large volume of flames,” Fisher said. “We really tried to save it, but there was no way. It just shows you what a few minutes can mean.”

The family smelled smoke and escaped the house quickly, he said. One Concord firefighter suffered a minor injury in trying to fight the fire, he said.

“We hope both of the cats made it, we know one did, and often cats will run off when there’s a fire,” he said.

Fisher said he arrived at the scene with firefighters from several area towns. He called for a second alarm because of the warm, humid weather that takes a toll on fire crews. “And because we needed help getting water,” he said.

Crews from fire departments in Boscawen, Concord, Penacook, Webster, Hopkinton, Canterbury and Warner helped fight the fire.
