Hearing set for Milford Special Town Meeting request
MILFORD — The Board of Selectmen discussed the timeline to move forward with the request for a Special Town Meeting on Sept. 9, pending the outcome of a ruling from the Hillsborough County Superior Court on the matter.
The town’s goal to purchase property at 127 Elm St. is critical to access Keyes Field after the EPA clean-up at the old Fletcher site begin. The only entranceway will be blocked during the clean-up process.
127 Elm St. would add another egress and much needed land for additional playing fields. The 5.8-acre lot abuts Keyes Field on the other side of the park from the current entrance.
The asking price was $600,000, but the town has until the end of the year to purchase the property for $190,000.
If the court deems the matter an emergency, they have the authority to proceed with the process to bring it to a vote at a Special Town Meeting on Sept. 9 during the primary.
A public hearing has been scheduled for Monday, July 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Milford Board of Selectmen’s meeting room. A Deliberative Session is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 14, at the Milford Town Hall Auditorium.
The goal is to fundraise as much as possible prior to the deliberative session. Hitchiner Manufacturing made a $25,000 donation toward the purchase of 127 Elm St. and to date more than $54,000 has been raised.
“We are about at 28 percent of the purchase price and are pleased with the progress being made,” said Milford Town Administrator Guy Scaife. He added, “This property has value to its strategic position and long-term benefit to the community.”
The board praised Hitchiner Manufacturing for their continued generosity to the community. “Last year they saw the need for a new PA system and upgraded it on their own.” said Chairman Gary Daniels.
Recreation Director Arene Berry updated the board on the town’s recreation and reported the pool at Keyes Field will open in one week, on June 16. Many summer activities such as swimming, soccer, archery, senior activities and Zumba in the park can be found on the Parks and Recreation web page.
