Littleton to observe 'Celebration weekend'

LITTLETON — With so much to celebrate — including art, music, and the town’s most famous, bright-eyed optimist — community leaders have expanded Celebration Weekend.

The event kicks off Friday and culminates Sunday, with a variety of offerings in between.

For several years, Littleton has promoted its art and music scene, as well as downtown restaurants and businesses, with events that are held on the second Friday of June, July and August. Immediately after the first June event, the town has hosted its Pollyanna Glad Day, which it will again do this year, while also adding a farmers market and Father’s Day pancake breakfast on Sunday.

The increased offerings, said Dave Ernsberger, a member of Littleton River District Commission and a downtown business owner, reflect the fact that Littleton has a lot going on, including the completion of gateways and other projects designed to get visitors to the downtown and closer to the Ammonoosuc.

On Saturday, Littleton — which for 2014 has adopted the motto of “The Be Glad Town” — will honor Pollyanna, the fictional character created by hometown author Eleanor H. Porter in 1913, with a ceremony at the Pollyanna bronze sculpture on the lawn of the Littleton Public Library.

During the ceremony, which will begin at 11:30 a.m., attendees will be invited to give a welcome wave and, like Pollyanna, to “be glad.” They will also be able to observe the presentation of the Pollyanna Signature Award to a resident whom Ernsberger said best exemplifies a cooperative, community spirit and a ribbon cutting for the Pollyanna Gateway. The gateway, like several others, is part of a multimillion dollar effort to make Littleton even more inviting and accessible.

Ernsberger said that Celebration Weekend is an opportunity to celebrate what Littleton was, is and is becoming.

Throughout the weekend, there will be six pianos placed throughout the downtown where visitors can just sit and plink and, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, there will be music on the lawn of the Littleton Community Center, located on the south bank of the Ammonoosuc. From 8 to 10 p.m., the music moves to the north bank, specifically to the newly completed Pollyanna Vista, where Rik Barron and the Dan Salomon Band, among others, will perform.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the community center will host Community Day, featuring a flea market, children’s activities, music, and food prepared by the Screaming Boar BBQ. The Schilling Beer Co. will host the inaugural “Blues on the River” event from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. On Thursday, from 7-9 p.m., Schilling Beer will get a head start on the weekend with “Chasing the Light: A photographic expedition of landscape and culture in the North Country.”

On Sunday, the farmers market will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the community center with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 1 p.m.
